10 Ways to Eat, Drink and be Merry … And Still be Healthy
Copyright 2005 Linda Slater Dowling
Many Americans get more than they asked for during the holiday
season. In fact, the average person gains five extra pounds
between Thanksgiving and New Years. Indeed, the temptations of
the holidays–from Uncle Bob’s “special” eggnog to grandma’s
famous potatoes au gratin and rich pecan pie–can be hard to
resist. The holidays are definitely a time to indulge here and
there, but if “here and there” turns into “morning, noon and
night,” your health and weight could be affected.
But there is good news: you can have your cake and eat it too.
Here are 10 tips on how to continue your healthy eating trend
right on through the holiday season–without being left out in
the cold.
1. Make Healthy Foods Easily Accessible. You’re running through
the mall, trying to find that perfect sweater for your sister,
when you realize you haven’t eaten in hours and you’re famished.
In the moment, you opt for a fast food burger to tide you over.
You can avoid many a fast-food meal by carrying some healthy
snacks with you (cut-up vegetables, nuts, seeds, etc.) and
waiting to eat until you get home. (If you find you’re ordering
a lot of fast-food while at home, consider cooking a few meals
and freezing them. They’re perfect to heat up while you’re busy
writing holiday cards–and your parents will thank you!)
2. Don’t Start a Diet. “Dieting” per se, is rarely a good idea
any time of year, but trying to be too strict during the
holidays may leave you feeling deprived. If you are overweight,
focus on not gaining any weight (like many Americans do) during
this festive time. If you’re a healthy weight, focus on
maintaining your weight. If you’re underweight, make sure that
stress and the season’s hustle-and-bustle don’t cause you to
lose any pounds.
3. Focus on the “Good” Foods. When faced with a Thanksgiving or
other holiday feast, a good trick is to fill up on foods you
know are good for you, and take just a taste of the others.
Holiday Foods to Focus On Green beans, asparagus, Brussels
sprouts, squash and sweet potatoes–just watch out for heavy
sauces or marshmallow toppings. All vegetables and crudités.
Natural meats (Turkey, beef, chicken and duck are all good
options, but be wary of processed sausages that may contain
cancer-causing nitrites.) Cheese cubes and fruit appetizers.
Cranberries (They’re loaded with antioxidants, fight cancer and
help protect your heart, teeth and urinary tract from disease.
One caveat, some cranberry sauces contain lots of sugar.)
Holiday Foods to Taste Pumpkin, apple and pecan pies: all have
some nutritional qualities, but they’re loaded with sugar (and
store-bought varieties may contain dangerous trans fats). White
breads and pastas. Mashed potatoes and stuffing (white potatoes
are mostly starch, and stuffing is mostly white bread). Cookies,
candies and other sweets.
4. Limit, or Avoid, Alcohol. Alcoholic drinks are loaded with
calories and may make you less aware of your healthy eating goal.
5. Keep Moving. OK, so this isn’t really about eating, but
keeping some sort of exercise routine going through the holiday
season is one of the best gifts you can give to your health. You
may even want to start a tradition of taking a long walk after
Thanksgiving dinner. Don’t worry if you don’t stick completely
to your normal routine–just keep moving as often as you can.
6. Be Choosey. Take a look at all of the food dishes before you
begin to fill up your plate. Then only pick those foods that you
really want. You may be used to doing this at your campus
cafeteria, but when it comes to your family’s home-cooking it
may take more of a conscious decision to not overeat.
7. Don’t Starve Yourself. Make certain that you eat throughout
the day, rather than “saving it all up” for one meal. Waiting
until the big Thanksgiving meal or holiday dinner buffet to eat
is a surefire way to end up feeling like a stuffed turkey.
8. Fresh is Always Best. When faced with food choices, remember
to stick to the cardinal rules of healthy eating: fresh, whole
foods are (almost) always better than processed ones. The same
goes for homemade foods over store-bought ones. While your mom’s
gingerbread cookies may be a little burnt on the edges or have
irregularly shaped arms and legs, they don’t contain the
preservatives, artificial flavors and colors that are sure to be
found in commercial cookies.
9. Stop Eating When You’re Full. It sounds obvious, but avoid
using the holidays as an excuse to eat until you need to loosen
your belt a couple of notches. Overeating takes a toll on your
body, and you’ll have a hard time enjoying the rest of the day’s
festivities with an upset stomach. Eat only until you feel
full–if you get hungry later you can always snack on the
leftovers.
10. Enjoy. It is the holidays, after all.
The Fitness Benefits of Swimming
By Rebecca Blain of http://www.everything-swimming-pools.com
There are many fitness benefits to swimming. By making it seem
like the body weighs much less than it actually does, swimming
is the perfect alternative for those who are not capable of
performing other types of exercises and activities. Individuals
with a spinal cord injury, for example, are able to strengthen
their muscles through swimming when they may not possess the
strength to walk. By establishing exercise routines in the local
gym, you can begin a progressive workout scheme that will help
you improve the quality of your health.
Before you jump up, go to the pool, and swim, there are many
things that you should be aware of. First, while swimming
exercises can allow those who cannot perform in many physical
exercises begin to improve their health, it must be done
carefully. Jumping in a pool and swimming laps does not mean
that you will improve your health at no risk. Getting started in
a swimming routine should be a slow process. You should start
off with easy breathing exercises, and learning the basic
strokes. Knowing these strokes will enable you to begin lap
swimming, synchronized swimming, and other forms of swimming
based exercises.
When you swim, regardless of the type of exercises you are
doing, it is important that you understand how your body reacts
to the exercise. Because of the nature of swimming, it can be a
rather deceitful activity. It is very easy to do, and makes it
appear as if you are not straining yourself. However, every
stroke you make exercises muscle groups and works your lungs and
heart. If you have any cardiovascular or other conditions, you
will need to ensure that you do not strain any portions of your
body. This is even more important if you are recovering from a
serious injury.
Most importantly, you will need to establish what level of a
swimmer you are. Most individuals who have been injured or are
just starting swimming exercises will be a beginning level
swimmer. At the beginning level, you should focus on the various
strokes, and how to breathe while swimming. This is very
important, as it can prevent you from drowning in the future.
Even if you suspect that you are better than beginner status,
start from this level. This will ensure that you unlearn any bad
habits, and that you do not strain your body. It is important
that when you begin the process, you make use of fitness centers
and the trainers that are available to you. This will prevent
injury and ensure you are working with a swimming program that
will benefit you in the long term.
When you start swimming, there are a variety of different
exercises that you can use to improve your stamina and general
health. The first of these is lap exercises. By swimming laps,
either leisurely or paced, you can exert your body to the level
that is appropriate for you. Leisurely laps are especially good
for those who need to start off slowly. By augmenting laps with
floats and other swimming aides, even beginning swimmers can
begin making progress at little risk.
When swimming laps, either over shallow or deep water, make
certain that you are not the only one in the swimming pool, or
near the pool. Cramps, muscle strains, and other injuries can
happen to anyone, even the professional swimmer. While this is
unlikely, it is not a risk you should take.
The second type of exercises are most commonly used with
synchronized swimming. By swimming in a variety of repeated
patterns in shallow or deep water, you can work all of the
muscles of the body without the strain associated with lap
swimming. This is the style of swimming exercises most commonly
used by someone with a spinal injury or other disabling
injuries. This style of swimming should always be done with an
instructor who can guide you through the basics and ensure that
you do not cause yourself any injury.
When you become a more expert swimmer, there are a range of
games and other activities that help tone muscles and encourage
good health. Including a variety of games like Shark and
Minnows, Water polo and water based Volleyball, you can make use
of your exercises in such a way where you can participate in
sports or leisure games.
There are a wide variety of swimming pools that you can use in
order to improve your health. The most commonly used are
standard Olympic sized pools. These can be found in many gyms
and training centers, and tend to have trainers available for
those who require one. Prices for trainers are based on the gym
you go to. Some trainers are included in the price of membership.
For those who do not want to go to the gym or local training
centers,
target="_new" rel="nofollow">home pools are more than acceptable for use,
as long as you have supervision when you are working on your
exercises. Above ground or in ground pools can both be used for
basic swimming sizes. If you want to work on laps, you will want
either a lap pool, or make use of an Olympic sized pool near you.
As a rule, there are a variety of things that you can do to
protect yourself when you are swimming. First, never go into the
pool alone. Accidents can happen to anyone, and this is the best
protection you can have against drowning. Second, you should
never attempt exercises alone without being instructed by a
trainer on how to safely do the strokes. This is especially true
for those recovering from an injury. Third, make certain the
href="http://www.everything-swimming-pools.com/pool-chemicals.htm
l" target="_new" rel="nofollow">chemical content of your pool is within
acceptable parameters. This is usually not an issue at training
centers and gyms, but advised for home swimming pools.
When you begin a progressive swimming exercise program, expect
to see slower improvement than from other, more intensive,
programs. However, as this is perhaps one of the easiest and
enjoyable ways to get into shape and stay into shape, everyone
can benefit with a little work.
How To Compare Treadmills - Choosing The Right Machine For You
How to Compare Treadmills - Choosing the Right Machine For You
Many people enjoy treadmills, but they can be a confusing piece of equipment to buy. There are, literally, hundreds of brands of treadmills. Learning how to compare treadmills is the only way to purchase the right brand for you. If this is your first treadmill purchase, though, you might want to consider the benefits of owning a treadmill.
Treadmill Benefits
Because the two most popular forms of exercise are running and walking, treadmills are designed to accommodate both. The speed and incline controls on a treadmill were designed to let the user control the machine to fit his or her needs. Treadmills also offer you the same workout despite the excruciating heat of summer, bitter cold of winter, vicious wind of spring, or incessant rain of fall.
Treadmills also offer a low impact workout. Their deck surfaces are designed to reduce pressure on your joints and absorb the impact of your feet as they repeatedly hit the surface. Most treadmills offer some variety as well. Depending on the model you purchase, many treadmills offer different programs to vary your workout speed and level of difficulty.
You must compare treadmills to learn about the different benefits.
Things To Think About
Before you begin to compare treadmills and invest in one , though, there are many things to consider. First, consider the horsepower. You do not want something that will wear out. Second, consider treadmill speed. Buy one that fits your activity needs. Next, decide whether or not you want a treadmill with a program. You also want to think about belt size, the durability of the deck, the type of incline you desire, and the hand rail options you want.
Comparing The Brands
Now you are ready to compare treadmills. When you start the comparison process, it is best to read a variety of reviews for the treadmill you are considering. Almost every brand has its own review guide to help you make a decision. In addition to reading reviews, think about trying the brands you like. You want to like the feel of the machine before you drop an extensive amount of money on it.

How To Get Rid Of Athlete’s Foot And Corns Naturally
Over the years I have collected many different natural remedies
- some from my family and friends from Eastern Europe, some from
other places. I have tried them myself and what have worked - I
put in my notebook for later use. I intend to bring them to you
in a series of short articles.
Here are two simple remedies for foot problems:
Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection affecting the areas around
toes and can spread to other areas of the foot. Some forms are
mild, but most can cause flaking, itching, deep painful cracks
and bleeding and can produce a foul odor. The fungus thrives in
warm and moist places and it can be easily transmitted,
specially in places like public showers, swimming pools, locker
rooms, etc.
Most over-the-counter drugs stop the symptoms for a while, but
it usually returns with vengeance. Here is a simple and
effective way of treating athlete’s foot I have learnt from my
Grandmother with easy to obtain natural ingredients:
Get some mutton fat (tallow) from a butcher’s shop (beef tallow
can also be used), trim the skin and blood vessels. Cook over
slow heat until it melts, strain and pour into jars, let it
cool. (Mutton tallow can be stored in a fridge in an air-tight
jar to prevent oxidation for a few weeks, beef tallow stores
almost indefinitely without refrigeration).
Wash and dry your feet and apply the tallow to affected areas in
a thin layer. Put clean socks on to prevent staining your
clothes.
Taking zinc supplements and vitamin E from a good source will
help speeding up the process and make it more permanent.
Corns are areas of hardened skin, usually on the tips or tops of
the toes, sometimes on the side of the foot. They can be
extremely painful. Usually they form in response to rubbing and
pressure from too tight or too narrow shoes.
You can get rid of them using very simple method:
Get a clove of garlic, run it through a garlic press or cut up
into small pieces, add a small pinch of sea salt and using a
spoon - mash it till smooth. Put a dab of it on the top of the
corn and cover with band-Aid.
In 2-3 days pull the band-Aid off - in most cases the corn will
come off.
Fitness and Health
Fitness and health have been closely related ever since fitness was first defined, because this sport involves good physical shape built on good state of health. The state of health of the people who practice various sports is always in attention of the instructors.
However, there are numerous sports which are rather spectacular, but practicing them exposes the sportsmen to particular risks. Such kind of problems can appear even in the sports for amateurs; there is, of course, specific pathology for every sport. Since the body is prone to different health problems, a factor which can provoke them is the volume and intensity of training. Long distance running and jogging are extremely popular forms of training.A frequent health problem in tennis is epycondylitis or ‘the tennis player’s elbow’. Weightlifting can lead to varicous veins or high blood pressure.
Fitness tries to make every exercise useful for health and body esthetics. The type of training that is recommended is the complex one, including aerobic and anaerobic exercises.
While doing aerobic exercises, the body satisfies its need of oxygen during effort. We are talking here about all types of resistance efforts, like long distance running, ski, rowing, fast walking, swimming, cycling, speed skating, etc. The consequences of these efforts are visible, first of all, at a cardiovascular and pulmonary level. This type of exercises are the most effective in burning calories and this is why they can easily burn fat tissue, as long as they last more than 40-45 minutes without stopping. The energetic support of these efforts comes from the fat acids which are mobilized from the adipose tissue.
The efforts of anaerobic type are responsible for increasing force and muscular mass and for bone resistance. During this type of short and intensive effort the body cannot satisfy the need of oxygen. What happens is the so-called ‘oxygen duty’, recovered in the breaks between the efforts. The most typical example is the break between two series of exercises meant to work the same muscle.
The effectiveness of fitness trainings is closely related to their weekly practice. There are a minimum number of trainings necessary for visible effects.
For the programs of anaerobic type (force) the experts say that two trainings a week are necessary, each of 30-45 minutes. During these sessions, the whole body is trained every time.
In the case of aerobic training (resistance), their weekly frequency must be increased to three, each between 20 and 60 minutes.
Both types of training must be continued uninterruptedly for at least two or three months. After this period, a one-week active break is recommended. In this time the person must make lighter efforts like walking and gymnastics, the purpose being now recovery and relaxation.
Starting from this minimum frequency, any supplementary training will make progress come sooner, as long as you avoid over-training or over-exerting. Deciding the optimum number of trainings, their volume and intensity depends a lot on the particularities and the possibilities of the person who practices the sport.
