Choosing the Right Flooring

Posted in Guidance, Home Improvement Portal by admin on the November 30th, 2008

There are numerous factors which need to be thought about when choosing what kind of flooring to install. Getting new flooring fitted in your home can breathe new life into it and can be a great way to reinvigorate your living environment. It may not be as expensive as you think either.

An important factor when choosing flooring is the function of the room it will go in. Flooring which makes sense for the dining room may not be appropriate for the bathroom or kitchen for example. Some of the most widely used types of flooring are carpet, vinyl, wood, and laminate.

Laminate flooring can be a great substitute for solid wood floors if you are looking for a wood effect floor at a lower cost. Laminate flooring is made from a sheet of MDF with a wood-effect plastic surface glued to it. The downside of laminate flooring is that whilst it is resistant to sctratches once it is damaged it is extremely difficult to repair. Apart from that it can still be a perfect choice for a kitchen, where the plastic coating provides an easy to clean surface. On the other hand a solid wood flooring would not be appropriate in a bathroom, or in fact any room which is likely to get very humid and wet. Some woods are more vulnerable to the wet than others.

If you are planning to fit a wooden floor, it’s important you have a suitable surface to fit it on. An ideal surface would be flat, and dry. There are options however to counter uneven flooring problems, such as laying ply throughout, or employing an underlay to create a ‘floating floor’.

Often laminate flooring is sold as a product you can fit together without help which is a great way of keeping costs to a minimum. Solid wood flooring requires however a higher degree of DIY skills, so it can sometimes be advisable to get solid wooden floors fitted professionally which on the downside can add a considerable cost.

One point to remember many people do not realise when they measure their room to calculate how much flooring they will need - is that it is crucial to include a 10mm gap around the edge of the room for the wooden flooring to expand and contract.

As a fundamental part of any interior design strategy, it is vital to select the right flooring. Whilst wooden or laminate floors can be ideal - often for a more chic minimalist look; carpet can be a better option if you are trying to achieve a more traditional home feel. The important thing is you take into account the various factors you need to consider before ordering new flooring.

Locating Local Craft Shows

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the November 28th, 2008

It’s that time of year again! The weather is warm and craft shows are starting to be scheduled. Are you ready to start looking for events?

We all know how profitable a craft show can be. Offline events are perfect for getting the word out about your business and making new contacts. What could be better than hundreds of shoppers walking right up to you and saying hello?

The most difficult part of a craft show is actually locating them before all the tables are booked. If you have never attended an event before, be prepared to spend several shows stuffed in the very back at a last minute table. Many of us start out like this, but as soon as you get on “the lists”, your table location WILL be better.

The following idea for locating events is brand new, and given to us by a “neighbor” at our last craft show. While chatting with her, she pulls out a book and asked if we had this. It was titled “Iowa Calendar of Events”, and was FULL of events for all over the state. Granted there were many events that do not accept vendors (theater dates, car shows, etc), but the list of shows that did accept vendors was amazing. All events were listed by date, complete with location and contact information. Perfect!

While this information might have been great for us being in Iowa, you might ask what good does it do for the rest of you in different states. I’ll tell you - this booklet was free from our travel information website. All we had to do is go online and request a free copy. Iowa has a very limited amount of sights to see, yet we still have a travel website. This to me says other states have the same kind of information on website or with local offices.

There’s a few ways to find out if your state has information like this:

- Check your state website
Often times the travel and event information will be right on your government website.

- Search online
Use terms like “travel” or “tourism” with your state to see if there’s a specific website.

- Local offices
If all else fails, contact your state government offices to see if anything in print is offered.

Even in a small state like Iowa, we were able to find a list that will keep us booked every month for the entire craft fair season. Once you have your information, the easy part is contacting those on the list. Easy!

Sewing Tips - Sew Buttons and Bows for Kids

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the November 25th, 2008

Here is a novel idea on how to sew and create your own decorative buttons and bows on kids’ clothes.

Sewing for kids is a lot of fun. It is a great way to try new ideas and sewing techniques, too. If you don’t have your own special child to sew for, then sew things for kids and give them to charity. It is still a gift of love and the kids really appreciate something made just for them.

Try the buttons and bows for kids. It really is cute and the kids love it!

Bows are really popular on kids garments, but they don’t hold up well in the laundry. So, here is how to sew some easy detachable bows.

This idea grew into a delightful sewing project that involved the kids, too. Kids have great imaginations and a lot of really good creative ideas on what they want to wear.

These buttons are called Velcro Button Bows/Flowers/Appliques. The kids call them “Stick-em Buttons”. They think these buttons are really “cool”. They love to change the “tops” of the buttons.

Here is how to sew “Stick-em Buttons.”

Sew the buttons at the shoulders of jumpers or overalls, on pockets or randomly scattered on jeans, tee shirts, skirts or other garments. The buttons can be functional or purely decorative.

Use up those old buttons in your button box. Paint the rim of the button with nail polish or craft paints if you like. The large, flat buttons are perfect for this sewing project. Buttons about 7/8 inch or larger work well.

First, sew a button onto the garment. Use double thread. Run it through beeswax and press it to melt the wax into the thread. This strengthens the thread and keeps it from tangling.

After sewing on a button, apply a drop of clear nail polish or Fray Check to the button threads to keep them secure.

Prepare the Velcro

Using a coin, draw a circle the size of the button onto some Velcro or use sticky Velcro circles. If the button has a rim, draw the Velcro circle to fit inside the button rim.

Glue the soft side of a Velcro circle to the top of the button that you stitched to the garment.

Next, sew some bows, ribbon flowers or small appliques or use pom poms, etc. For boys, use small appliques of their favorite animals, cars, toys, etc.

Fuse, glue or sew the rough hook side of a Velcro circle to the underside of the bow/flower/applique, etc.

Button the button and stick the bow, etc. to the top of the button.

Make several different kinds of bows in different colors or whatever you like to have a selection of things to attach to your “Stick-em Buttons”.

Remove the bows to launder the garment. The soft loop side of the Velcro doesn’t stick to everything else in the wash.

The kids will have fun with their “Stick-em Buttons!”

It just makes sense!

The History of Soap Making - Part 2

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the November 25th, 2008

The English began manufacturing soap during the 1100s, Italy, Spain and France, also began making soap at an early stage, possibly pre-dating England by up to 400 years. Early soap production primarily used tallow from goats and beech ash, but following experimentation by the French, olive oil was found to be an effective alternative to animal fats.

In about 1500 this discovery was introduced to England and the industry began to grow rapidly King James I granted special privileges including a monopoly to a soap maker for $100,000 a year, it was clearly a product for the wealthy.

In the American colonies, commercial soap making began in the early 17th century as settler tradesmen arrived from England, but in spite of this, soap making remained almost exclusively a home made product for many years. It is understood however that commercial soap makers visited houses and traded waste fats in exchange for soap.

In 1783 Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele accidentally simulated the reaction that occurs in the present-day boiling process of soap making, when he boiled olive oil with lead oxide. This produced a sweet-tasting substance that he called lsss - now known as glycerine.

Until late in the 18th century wood or bark ash was generally used as the catalyst in soap making. In 1791 soap making was revolutionized with the discovery by the French chemist Nicholas Leblanc of a process for making soda ash from common salt. This discovery significantly reduced the cost of the ash ingredient, while also improving quality.

Some 20 years later Michel Eugene Chevreul established the basis for both fat and soap chemistry and thus the science of modern soap making was born. His studies revealed the chemical nature and relationship of fats, glycerine and fatty acids.

The invention during the mid-1800s of the ammonia process by Belgian chemist Ernest Solvay further reduced the cost of obtaining the alkali soda ash from common salt and again the quality and quantity available for the industry increased significantly.

Together with the developing availability of power to operate factories, these advances made the manufacture of soap one of America’s fastest growing industries by 1850. This increased availability also changed soap from a luxury to an everyday convenience; however taxation in some countries also played a part in preventing its widespread availability and therefore inhibiting improvements in cleanliness standards.

Gary Everson is the Soap Business Guru. In his new e-book: “Soap Making for Profit” he describes in clear, step by step terms how to turn an enjoyable and creative hobby into a profitable business.

How To Make A Candy Topiary Bouquet

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on the November 25th, 2008

Candy bouquets make great centerpieces or gifts for just about any occasion. Here are some instructions for creating your own candy topiary bouquet in either a flower pot or mug.

1. Either buy/find a flowerpot or mug to match your theme. For instance, for Mother’s Day, you might want to use a flowerpot or mug with a Spring floral theme.

2. If you are using a mug, you will want to buy a piece of floral foam (to cut to size and put inside the mug base), a dowel rod (to stick in the base and form the topiary) and a Styrofoam ball (to stick at the end of the dowel rod and form the upper end of the topiary). If you are using a flower pot, you can buy the supplies described for the mug or you can buy one of the pre-made topiary forms that set directly in the flowerpot. I’ve seen these forms with a Styrofoam pot-shaped base and Styrofoam ball top at Michael’s and Joanne Fabrics. If you go with the pre-made form, you can hot glue it directly into the flower pot.

3. Once you have your form in either your mug or pot, you should hot glue Spanish moss or other decorative items such as shells, dried flowers, etc to the to the top of the base foam to basically hide the foam that makes up the base.

4. Buy some floral pins and hard candies. I recommend getting hard candies that color-coordinate with your theme such as fruit bon-bons in pastel wrappers for Mother’s Day or Easter and red/white hard peppermint candies for Christmas. Take a metal floral pin and stick it through the end of the candy wrapper (just outside the twisted end) and then stick the floral pin with the attached candy on to the round Styrofoam topiary ball. Keep repeating this process until the entire ball is covered with hard candies and you can’t see any Styrofoam peeking through.

5. To dress up the candy bouquet, you can floral pin ribbons or small silk flowers between some of the hard candies. Also, tie pieces of ribbon around the dowel right below the Styrofoam ball. It looks great if you leave the ribbon tails long enough to hang down and disguise the wood dowel. I recommend either using curling ribbon or 1/2″ wide organza ribbon for this task.

You’ve successfully completed your candy topiary bouquet! Use the beautiful bouquet as a centerpiece at your next celebration or give it as a great gift for Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day or any occasion!

A bra or brassiere is typically made up of two elastic straps located on both sides of the shoulder, with two cups to support the breasts, a center panel, and a hook to fasten both ends of the bands together. There are some Wacoal Bra that comes with sturdy under wires to give excellent support and improved shape to the female figure.

There is also a tshirt bra line for the women always on the go.

In choosing the size of the Wacoal bra, one should always determine the correct band size by measuring the circumference around her body and not including the breast area. Correct cup size is also very important - one should make sure she knows her correct cup size because a too loose cup will not look good and a too tight fitting cup will feel very uncomfortable. Cup sizes are indicated by letters like A, B, among others anywhere.

In the United Kingdom, surveys reveal that around 70% of women wear ill-fitting brassieres. This is mainly because of inadequate knowledge regarding brassieres Wacoal bra always makes certain that the woman finds a bra that fits her just right. Flattering shape and maximum support go hand in hand with the Wacoal bra line!

To get the right Wacoal bra, make sure that you get the right cup size as well as the right band size. The only fool-proof way for this is to try the bra on before purchasing. In Europe, bra comes in increasing size, such as AAA-AA-A-B-C-D-DD-E-F-FF-G-GG-H-J. The band size can be determined by measuring the circumference under the breasts and add a certain amount to give allowance to the wider circumference of the ribcage around the breasts. In America, around 4 inches to 6 inches are added to the measured circumference to get the correct size. Bra size also changes and fluctuates depending on the amount of weight gained or loss. Menstrual cycle also affects the bra size of the woman.

There are also Wacoal bra that are designed to maximize the appearance of small breasts. Some also are called minimizers, which are perfect for woman with very large breasts and who wishes to downplay the breast size a bit. Some Wacoal bra are made of very thin materials, usually lace, which are designed to show off and to be used when attempting seduction.

No matter what your size and shape, there is a Wacoal bra for you.

Tips while you buy a neck tie

Posted in Civvies by admin on the November 24th, 2008

A neck tie is the most important clothing accessory that goes along with the normal shirts and pants. More often, you are confused as to how to tie a neck tie, how to buy a good neck tie and take care of it properly, which knots suits you and your outfit.

There are some basic things that you should keep in mind while you buy a neck tie:

1. You should try the neck tie and check whether it ties a knot well.

2. Material used such as polyester or silk-polyester blend.

3. The inner side of the tie should have some stuff to give some look to the body.

4. Other than in standard neckties that range from 52 to 58 inches, you need to order a custom tie.

5. The lining of a tie should hold its shape as high quality ties are lined with 100% wool.

6. Good quality ties are cut across the fabric which you can test by making a tie loop on your hand and if it makes a twirl in air then it is not of a good quality.

7. Inspect the tie closely and carefully for any threads or loose ends.

8. Even if you touch a silk tie and it seems to be rough then the silk would be of inferior quality.

Some tips you should bear in mind while you wear a neck tie:

1. You should check that the front end of your tie should be long enough so that it touches your waist of paints.

2. Avoid wearing ties that are too bright in color.

3. Its good to wear to wear darker shade ties with light shade shirts. It means the color should not be so light that it fades with your shirt or it is so dark that it clashes with your outfit.

4. You should have a tie knot proportional to the collar neither so big that it spreads the collar nor too small that it is lost in the collar.

5. If you are wearing a patterned tie, the color of it should be complementary to the color of your suit and the shirt should be of secondary color.

6. While wearing a tie, its better to wear a woolen tie with a woolen suit and a silky tie with a silken shirt.

7. Tie a neck tie in front of a mirror and avoid using clips on the tie.

8. Keep your shirt buttoned up and collar up while you put your tie.

9. Keep the knot of your tie tight in the process of tying the neck tie.
